ULEZ

It's OK. Looking at Johnny's responses, it's clearly a conversation that needs having quite a few more times before it starts to sink in with some folk.

In reality, it's a bit of a non-issue really. (Which is why Khan got re-elected recently). The policies are working, bit-by-bit, both for congestion and for air quality. And in reality, very few people can't afford a ULEZ-compliant car if they want one. Pretty much any petrol car registered after 2000 will be Euro 4 (and therefore ULEZ-compliant). Frankly, if Johnny's trying to tell us that there are folk out there who can't afford a 25 year old car, I'm not sure many will believe him (and that's clearly what the majority of the London electorate felt too. The joys of democracy, eh?)!

I absolutely take his point about poorly-maintained, smoky examples, and I'd be happy to give him my full support if he'd like to start a campaign to improve MOT emissions standards. I completely agree they're not fit for purpose... ;)
Not saying that people can't afford 25 year old cars.
What I'm saying is that we used to have perfectly maintained 10 year old cars (sometimes luxury cars) and now we go around in scraps that shouldn't be on the road.

Nothing to stop you driving round in a perfectly maintained 10 year old petrol car right now. In fact, if you choose wisely, there's nothing to stop you driving round in a perfectly maintained Euro 6 diesel, if you prefer.

There's a risk that under our communist regime they'll introduce new taxes at the drop of the hat, like they did with ULEZ.
Pay per mile for diesel and petrol is next and will be probably based on emissions/car class/value/age/colour/weight/ f#ck knows what.
So, no point spending money on a car that might be scrapped in 3 months time.
Better to drive around in a scrap, barely legal, so it can be disposed off without much loss and tears.
This is the unfortunate state of affairs in UK: we're slaves to the very politicians that are supposed to represent us.

I see 2 year old cars that are virtually scrap.

I see old and newer cars that are held together on a shoestring.

But you don't have to have those, and they are being forced off the road, albeit slowly.. There are good cars around that will fit the need, without breaking the bank.

See my previous post.

There was some advance warning
Pay per mile for diesel and petrol is next
is it?

Are you confusing a charge per mile to bring EV's back into a fair tax system, equivalent to fuel duty, that all ICE cars pay?

A good car won't need to be scrapped.

Only if that's what you want to do.

Oh please...

Go and live in an actual communist regime and then come back (if they'll even let you!) and cry about living in a "communist regime".

"There are only two things that are certain in life, death and taxes". Benjamin Franklin in 1789. You're really not that special you know? We all have to pay taxes if we want to live in a civilised society. The Far Right tend to regard all taxation as "theft" but seem happy to take the benefits just the same. You will be taxed under any kind of government- always have, always will be. Get used to it or you'll die sad and bitter, but you're still gonna be taxed either way.

And yeah, you drive round in whatever you like, so long as it's legal. Nobody really cares!

That they didn’t meet the ULEZ imposed targets.

Ah.. so they were "good" but "dirty" cars then? About 55,000 out of 2.6 million registered in Greater London. Of those, not all were scrapped. Some were permanently exported (lots donated to Ukraine) and as has been said, some were simply sold into areas where there was no ULEZ. Result: London's air has become measurably cleaner.

Being told that I have to give away my property is criminal.
I paid for those cars.
I know that sums bummers don't pay for anything because we pay for them, but we the taxpayers pay for our stuff.
And politicians take it away from us.

So I should be happy that someone in Ukraine is driving my car now.
WTF!!!

There were (pretty generous, in my view) scrappage incentives. Did you qualify for those? (And if not, why not)?

Really? As well as paying your taxes, you also pay full whack for all your healthcare? Your street lighting? Your share of the armed forces? Your share of the education system...? your share of the roads?

So I should be happy that someone in Ukraine is driving my car now.
WTF!!!

If it cheers you up any, you could try being happy that millions of Londoners are no longer having to breathe the carp that comes out of your tailpipe...;)

I had no problem with the original ULEZ as inner London is quite polluted but it really wasn’t needed in the outer 'Greater London' areas. It was and still is a money raising exercise. A ban backed up by a hefty fine on these so-called 'dirty' cars would have been better but according to Khan, motorists can carry on poisoning people, just as long as they pay him for the privilege!
