Is FTTP (Fiber to the premises) really the future?

yes it will work, the standard is very poor going through an air brick.It's served me well enough for the past 15ish years so not really concerned
I would hazard a guess, if all the installs around the UK were assessed, quite a few would not meet best practice in one way or another.
My NTL/Virgin install had two cables up from the ground-level box to the loft. One was white the other black, guess that was what happened to fall out of the van on the day.
I always thought their internet service was slow, although speedtest did show fast speeds. When I switched to supposedly slower ADSL to save money I was surprised to find that ADSL seemed much faster while browsing, despite slower speedtest results. I reckon they prioritised speedtest data, the rest got held up in a queue behind a load of on-demand TV and protocol overhead.
ADSL/VDSL seems like a simpler concept, and FTTP is simpler still, in both cases your data isn't having to slot around a load of other stuff.
