Blown plaster repair advice

Hello Please help!

I removed some very old wallpaper on stairway and hallway and and found some holes and blown plaster. It's generally plasterboard under the plaster in the house but in this section it seems like wood, where handrails were fixed to walls.

Anyway, what would be the best way to DIY repair this plaster, and could you recommend any diy products for filling. I think id need to take out a big amount of loose plaster.

See how much more has blown first, hopefully just where the wood is. Plaster won't stick to wood so screw on some 9.5mm plasterboard and make good with easifill.

The only thing is 9.5mm plasterboard will stick out as current plaster is only 3 or 4mm. Could I use 3mm hardboard or something instead?

Not yet. I just pulled wallpaper off. I will go over with steam stripper to remove remaining stubborn paper next.
