Flags to be Replaced

my grandparents shot up the post office in Dublin in 1916 simply because they ran out of 1st class stamps. What a family.
That was a subtle reference to the Easter uprising of 1916 when the GPO in O’Connell St was commandeered by the Irish volunteers. Own your heritage and be proud of their contribution to Irish independence

I am actually quite proud of it and their contribution. I always felt their shame in the 70's when the IRA were bombing Britain, the IRA they knew were never part of that and they couldn't understand why it was happening really, they'd won their war a long time before.

Do you mind saying which Counties your folk were from?

The old man was from Dublin and the mammy was from New Ross in Co Wexford, Mrs fillys folks were from Co Meath and Tipperary, which is a long way off.

We both grew up on a huge council estate on the outskirts of Slough built by the GLC to accommodate the overspill from London, because of the demographics of the London areas they cleared, our estate had quite a large Irish contingent, as opposed to an estate at the other end of town where most of the evacuees were Eastenders.

After typing that I just remembered my mum was actually English, I didn't find out till I was in my late teens, her mother came across and gave birth to her in Chelsea, she was illegitimate and that sort of thing didn't go down well in Ireland, after being born here she was taken back to Ireland and raised by her grandparents.
A brother of hers (also illegitimate) somehow traced her and arranged to meet her at Paddington Station one day, the old man was dead by then so she asked me to go with her and explained to me that she was illegitimate, she cried like a baby when she told because she was so ashamed bless her.

Anyway, Paddington Station looking for a bloke wearing a red carnation, we didn't need to see the carnation, he was a dead ringer for Uncle Paddy.

For the 20 years after that until her death, I'd wind her up (in a good humoured way) about her being English, she'd whack me with a broom or something but but then that enchanting smile she had would break through.

Very interesting...

So basically the ebb and flow of immigration due to personal/economic/political reasons?

Did they journey by boat?
