So about those tariffs...

I really don't understand the whole tarriffs thing. All it does it make it more expensive to manufacture or buy anything that has overseas parts. Costs Americans more. I guess the government gets the tax through their equivalent of VAT?

Fascinating for many reasons.

But they have left open a massive question. It is logical that, if the policy is illegal, then any tariffs collected so far have to be refunded. But the court seems to have deliberately not answered this crucial point with some court members saying it would be just too complicated to refund.

One wonders what the he'll do in retaliation though...

There is a mechanism, I believe, for Trump to keep the tariffs going for another 100 days using an executive order under another statute. After that, I don't know.

All they voted on was the way he went about it. Looks like there are other ways but will take longer and can’t be done under an executive order.

Yes, it was about the separation of powers. Trump should really have gone through Congress to set these tariffs, because the powers Congress had already given the President were only meant to be used in emergencies. He had to invent emergencies for each tariff executive order he signed. Like the one about there being a non-existent fentanyl crisis coming from Canada.

But it looks like Trump is about to start a war with Iran without involving Congress like he is supposed to. Essentially, Trump doesn't care about the law or the constitution. He only cares about himself.

The markets don't seem to see it as a big deal.
"Markets rise as supreme court rules Trump exceeded powers in imposing tariffs"

"Stock market investors are welcoming the supreme court’s rejection of Donald Trump’s global tariffs"

Where would they have gone if the result had gone the other way?
