Changed radiator now F&E Tank is overflowing

But I don't understand your original reluctance to go and have a look in the loft.

Nasty cold dark places I know but all the evidence pointed to a problem up there!

Not reluctance, just time! I had to wait until Saturday because of long working hours Mon-Fri.

I don't mind the loft space, I replaced a couple of seized isolation valves while I was up there with my gear so all in all, a pretty productive weekend.
 
Strange though why changing a rad should affect the static level in the F&E cistern
I thought this one through...

I bunged the system rather than draining it, and in doing so, nudged the float valve thereby raising the water level.

I couldn't say 100% that the float valve wasn't contributing as it was a mess, so I changed it to be on the safe side. But certainly the main catalyst was clumsiness.
