At great cost, effort and much consternation. And that was straight forward and simplistic in terms of distance travelled.

Space travel is dangerous.
Everything is trying to kill you.
A single widget, even fractionally on the pizz, will do it.
It's not like turning the radio up in your van, to drown out that annoying rumbling or knocking.

And space travel doesn't happen on paper or a computer screen.


Being pragmatic keeps people alive.
NASA people might dream big but, when it really comes to it, they're pragmatists.

The laws of physics are not going to change significantly enough to allow humans to travel to the nearest star. You can have such fun with theories though, it can keep a thread going for ages.
