What would you price this?

I have had the chimney stack removed from above roof and also below loft. Polish builders added an RSJ that is virtually leaning on floor joists about 20 years ago.
I need toremove the bricks left from the chimney stack in the loft space.

What would you price this as a rough guide as an older builder is trying to really rip off my sister!

I've no idea but any time I get a quote which I think is in the "rip off" range I just get more quotes.

Maybe the builder doesn't want the job and has priced it so that they don't get it.

He already put a few breeze blocks at the top of the wall and said i am coming back to remove RSJ and remaining bricks.

Total quote £5,000!!! Why some older builders taking the mick of ladies? I did stop the job but my sister already had paid £750 deposit. He also wanted all the cash in advance! So fuming with some of these people, so if mys siter had not contacted me she would have lost at least over £4k!!

Whst exactly was quoted for? You say removing a few bricks?

Please add everything that was quoted..

Is there scaffolding needed? Is there skips included? Is all materials included and whst about vat. Is he vat regiestered or just a sole trader working under the vat threshold. Is he insured and is it a business you phoned who take into consideration all above and adding in admin costs too along with profit. What about guarantees? Is he guaranting it?

Its all well and good slandering someone for overpricing but once you factor in everything and using a reputable builder, then 5k wouldnt be to much of a rip of price in todays world.

If its joe soap down the pub turning up with argos tools and hanging off ladders with no come backs, then 5k is abit much.

Ive read your post a few times and confused. Your saying "I" have had the chimney stack removed and i need to remove the bricks left from the chimney stack then its someone trying to rip of your sister?

Also, where are you getting she would have lost 4k? Do you think all this work should be 1k?

This is the original quote, too many words and nothing really.
The builder came and added a few breeze blocks for 2 hours and he said to my sister he was coming the day after to remove the RSJ.

I cannot see more than £750 worth of work which is the deposit that we lost and i am glad I stopped them. My sister was recommended that builder by her roofer ( the builder's son ) , I spoke to him on the phone and explained that I think it is way overpriced and he told me when he sat down with his dad he realised that the price is crazy and told me that's why he does not business with his dad and has separate companies.

There was not skips involved, no ladders or scaffold, all the brick work to be removed was from the loft space.

We agreed to stop any extra work and keep the deposit for 2 hours of brick work that was done.
The builder was not going to do all the things he wrote either, he saw a young lady and thought I can take the mickey. Usual stuff for some builders in their 70s ! So mad about such attitude, They should be honest despite who they work for.
