Hi all I have a back boiler heating system with a Baxi Bermuda 45e fire fronting it. The back boiler and baxi are approx 3 years old. I have a thermostat control in the hall, and a thermostat on the tank (set to about 130deg) I also have a blue box on top of a Valve, I assume from its construction this is a diverting mechanism.

The heating on/off is; well was, controlled by a Randall 3022 but this has decided to stop working and I have to manually turn the dial to get the heating/water on. Unfortunately even this has kind of stopped working, I turn it on and I can feel the pump start up by placing my hand on the pump but the water never gets hot (cold bathing is not doing my sensitive skin much good :) )

When I first turn the timer to on the baxi tries to fire up and the Green light comes on and off a few times, its like its trying to start but can't. Consequently no hot water.

Can anyone advise me on how to check this system or get it started for the moment.

Off topic chat...
I want a new system, preferably a combi that can power a shower I have asked several companies to quote me but none actually have, I know its difficult to make quotes up when your busy; i do it myself. I just want a good professional fitter who will do the job properly.

Matt, we have a bit of a discrepency here in what we are being told I think. I think you are assuming it is the really old 401 or something

If it is a 45/? and is only 3 years old it will have a pcb and electronic ignition.

The green light comes on when all is ok but will glow orange/red when locked out.

It stills needs a corgi as to check this fault needs the fire front removed and gas connections disturbed.

My money would be on the spark electrode, spark lead shorting to earth (had a few of these on these bbu's), blocked pilot.

Only ever had to change 1 pcb on a new baxi bbu. Usually something very simple I've found.

Tut tut CM some baxi bbu have had boards for about ten years.
As dave says your boiler prob only needs a service to clear pilot

Hi guys, just got in from work, thanks for the replies.

Yes it is a 45e and yes it has electronic ignition. I don't have a red/orange light just a green light that goes on and off, the sequence seems to be Green light on 4secs off for 1-2secs green light on for 4secs etc it tries this about 4-5 times then stops.

 shame on me I didnt read the post properly and never come across the new ones as not many installers my way bother with replacing BBU's like for like

I humbly express my apologies and will now sit in me corner with me dunce cap on

:)

I thought it was a typo and should read 30 years old in stead of 3. why spend so much money on a back boiler, i think they are about 1400 quid over here.

In that case why are you asking for quotes?

Do you not realise that all of the companies you ask to quote, but not do the work, are utterly wasting their time on you?

If you want a professional job done, then find one professional, engage him/her to do the job, and pay them what they ask for. You'll have a tradesperson for life and you won't be p*ss*ng off everyone else in the industry.

Open question, i.e. to everyone: where TF does this nonsense about "getting quotes" come from? I wasn't taught it in school, so where do people get such a stupid idea?

Here here.

Had a quote the other day who, once I turned up (after 4pm to suit her busy lifestyle) let slip she had already had 6 quotes.

I asked her whether she realised who was going to pay for the other 5 peoples time (eg: other customers like her) and she didn't understand.

She rejected ours because 'we had only been in business 6 years'.

The nonsense about the quotes could well have its origin in insurance companies that are obliged to pay for work. They are not interested in the quality of the job, as long as it lasts long enough to be outside the period they have to cover. Could also be from `business advisers` or consultants who believe that if you get various quotes and take the cheapest, you are doing a clever bit of buying. This works wonders in a buyer’s market. As we all know, in this day and age the people that call with the message `I am just getting some quotes` will only get a result from those who are desperate for a job. Most tradesmen that I consider good, in any profession whatsoever do little or no advertising; they don`t need to. If you are half decent are booked up for weeks if not months. And then of course you have those who think that as you are to make a PROFIT out of them, you should be ready to kiss their you-know-what and line up for a chance to bid. Personally, if I get someone I do not know asking for a quote, I find out if they are getting other quotes as well. If they do I ask them to call again if they are not happy with the results from others.
