'Damaged' worktops

I have some woodworking to do and to start with I need to make a bench. I fancied using some nice heavy worktop, perhaps two lengths, one on top of the other, to get some weight and solidity, to make the top. I've been told that you can get worktop that has been damaged in transport fairly cheaply but still good enough for a bench: does anyone know where?

You shouldn't have to double up on thickness unless the bench is gonna be really long, a simple framework under neath should support it all.

Ask around builders merchants, diy sheds also have marked down marked worktops. Try eBay for offcuts.

Anyway, thank you for your answers, I shall wander into a stockist and try to look as though I know what I'm talking about Will they cut it to length for me?

Didn't mean my response to appear sarky

If you are buying from one of the sheds they may have a board cutter and would cut it for you. If not take a couple of folddown trestles and a handsaw and cut roughly to size on site.

I would ring a few stockists before travelling any distance, some will only sell off damaged stock when they have a few to get rid of or just prior to a stocktake.

What if their cutter is not bored at all, but lively and interested? Will he still cut it?

Then they will be convinced you are 'trade'

If you get really lucky you still might end up taking him home

ps: A flat cap and braces also helps.

Now, I reckon braces, flat cap, a 'tache but short skirt and high boots as well, , I could probably get them to 'damage' a worktop for me as well as cut it. What do you think?
