Installing additional sockets

Been to look at a grd floor, 2 room new extension, and am going to break into the downstairs ring main, but the fuse protecting the circuit is a rewirable, and in one of the rooms is a door leading out into the back garden, so are able to plug a extension lead to outside, not on an rcd.

My question is this......Can I just go ahead with the additional circuit alterations or has my new alteration got to conform to bs7671 which means I need to install an RCD, which the customer doesn't want.

Are you doing this work for someone, maybe for payment.I hope not as you don't seem to even know the basics!
 
Does this mean that you can't add an extra socket, on say a grd flor dwelling unless you change the circuit or new point to an rcd?
 
Decided to put a 13a rcd fused spur in each room on the existing ring, and spur off to 3/4 sockets in each room as radials.....covered.....thanks for the put downs....so much for advice!!!

Yes, common sense and consideration of safety for a non thinking person using the socket with an extension lead into the garden make fitting the RCD a very good idea. Then there are regulations.

why not?

you can have as many sockets of a fused spur as you like..

you don't have to upgrade the existing wiring to meet the current regs as long as it's safe.... the only exception being main bonds..
 
Forgive me, but I was under the impression that if you upgraded the CU, then you had to upgrade the main earths, but not if you were doing minor works.
 
IMO the idea of putting the sockets for an entire room onto a 13A FCU in order to get round the problem of no RCD protection on the circuit at source is so far removed from a professional standard design that it beggars belief.

Exactly, "In your opinion", which is no more, nor less, valid than the opinion of others who may disagree - which is no reason not to voice it, of course, but it might be nice to qualify it as an opinion rather than hard fact.

I agree with your opinion, in so far as I would not expect a professional electrician to do something like this. I'm not so sure that it's so bad as to be classed as a violation of the regs, though.

would you quibble if they changed the sockets to RCD fronts and plugged in 2 x 4 way extension leads?
most of us have 13A extension leads plugged in behind the telly to run the video, sat box, dvd, tv etc from...

it's also common practice to fit RCD socket outlets where RCD protection by other means is not viable

so the OP is fitting what is in effect a permanently fixed extension lead into an RCD....

I'm still waiting for RF to expand on his statement.. you assumed that is the reg he was aiming for..
