hey,
how far away from breeze blocks do I need to put the tails for the rads to allow for the plasterboard / plaster etc..? Am putting in central heating to a new room and have no idea what distance it needs.

any advice appreciated!
cheers,
Rich

6 ins from the wall will do you and then cut off to suit.

Try and cover with something as you are bound to catch your legs!

Are you bringing them out through the wall you are plasterboarding/plastering,or up through the floor in front of the wall?

coming up through the floor

I'm guessing that the above '6 inches' was presuming you were coming out of the wall ?

The fixing instructions for the radiator will tell you how far from a plastered wall you'll need to measure out to drill holes in the floor, so I'd be tempted to wait until the plastering has been done because the extra amount is likely to vary based on how even your wall is and therefore how much plaster/plasterboard is used to get an even surface.

If you do guess, you're unlikely to get it spot on so drill large enough holes to give you room for adjustment.

How will the plasterboard be fixed? Dot and dab? screwed to baton?

Do you have the rads that you are going to fit?

You can obviously accurately measure what the pipe centre will be from the finished wall. You can also calculate, with an acceptable tolerance, what the thickness of the wall lining will be. If you use (presumably you will be) plastic pipe under floor with copper tails upto the rad this will allow you to accomodate any slight discrepancy in pipe position after the wall is finished.
This kind of 'guesswork' is done regularly on first fixes before walls are lined with, to my knowledge, no problems. It's all dependant on your measuring ability!!

I always add 43mm at either end of rad for tails. This works for the TRV lockshield combinations I use. Distance from wall depends on rad type/size you are getting and which way round you will fit brackets, as well as allowance for plasterboard and dabbing. Some trade catalogues will give you all the measurements you need for the pipes if you know where the wall is going to be. You could always leave pipes under the floor, with access covers, and finish them off when rads are fitted, as you aren't coming out of the wall.
