I've been given a lovely Toshiba lap top which is secondhand. There is a lot of folders. Is it ok for me to delete, as there seems to be a lot of the other persons files, which I must add I am not able to view. But as they are still there it is very annoying. Will I delete something important to the running of the laptop. That is my fear. Would someone please advise me as to what to do!!!

Hi luisa
I am no expert as you can see by my other posts

I have had trouble with my toshiba lately
I erased the lot and recovered it , and mine still works ok, but you do not need to be that drastic.

Whilst sorting it I deleted a lot of old stuff

Until an expert comes along
Only delete things that look like they belonged to the other person
Anything looking impotant like toshiba or microsoft or windows leave alone.
And leave anything your not sure off

I backed all mine up onto a remote hard drive , so at least I had a copy, incase it all went wrong.
I also found the computer sorted out things , if you delete part of the workings, by mistake but dont rely solely on that.

I found them all in alist on add remove programs and done it there

I am sure if you can still get on line after , someone will get the stuff back if you wrongly delete it.

Sorry luisa just noted you said files , suppose the above still applys
My toshiba if you try to delete files, and there essential to the computer
A message appears to warn you first, most of them seem to be yellow colour files , so leve them ones alone if not sure

If it's files and folders in My Documents, then it should be OK to delete them.

What kind of files is it? Is it documents and pictures and thiings?

Thanks Rocky for your help. Hi Alison I managed to delete certain unwanted files and video clips which were in My Notebook. I'm very new to all this computer stuff. I remember when I was at school in the seventies my teacher saying " In the future everyone will have a computer on there desk" Needless to say we didn't believe him. And here we are!!!!

so am i but you soon pick it up.
Alison gave me a usefull program in my other post about the wizard thing.
It is called ccleaner it clears a lot of unneeded stuff from the computer.
It is free and simple to install and use

www.ccleaner.com
download from hippo

if your unsure what to do come back and someone will advise

Yep, CCleaner is very good but ALWAYS back up your registry (it gives you the option) before you run the cleaner - that way if anything goes wonky, you can go back to the previous registry.
