Dot n dab over paper

Boxing in pipes with plaster board, I tried to use dot n dab adhesive to box in it was on a papered wall, I take it, it dont stick to lining paper or any wallpaper?
 
Just think of wetting a wall-papered wall to get the paper off. That is what you are doing when you put anything water- based on a papered wall.!!!
