Laid a new lawn last year (rolawn Turf) and some of the lawn looks a bit thin in places and the odd bit of browny/yellow.

Can anyone recommend a good feed for the lawn or any TLC that I should give it?

Thanks

steve - Rolawn is top quality turf but it likes decent light (not shady) so check-out trees/shrubs casting shadows. April's a bit early to make judgements about lawns 'cos it's only started growing, so maybe leave it a month or so before taking any remedial action. But I'm with scoops on this one ... dog **** I bet will be the cause. Are the patches anything from say 2" to 3" and bigger in diameter? If you have a dog is it a bitch ... they squat and aim the pee into the lawn, a dog dog will aim his pee at the bushes thus missing the grass.

There are two fixes ...
1. follow the dog around with a hose or bucket of water and drench the grass immediately post-pee, or if you don't want to look arse,
2. give the dog Green-Um tablets (a natural product) from:
http://www.markandchappell.com
this will prevent the pee from turning the grass brown.

I speak from experience ... Rolawn/trees/dogs/Green-Um. Green-Um does work!

Note: the mods appear to have re-designated the correct description for a female dog into a word beginning with a *.

If no dog, you might have grubs ,they love new turf roots.
Check with the neibours if they are have problems.
You might peel back on roll and check for grubs,if so a product called Bug-be-gone can be had at your local garden centre.

grass went down last august, no dog but cats have been in

some patches are 2" in diameter but some of the other brown is mixed in with green grass

I use a product called 'Lawn Magic' from www.superspray.co.uk name sounds a bit corny but the stuff works great. Its a liquid concentrate and is applied with a Superspray fixed to a hosepipe. I think its better than pellet feeds as they can burn the grass if it doesnt rain after its applied.

For fixing weeded spots or small bare patches, I take a couple of pot carryingtrays from the GC and fill the circles with compost and so grass seed in them. You get mini circles of turf which can be used as patches any time of the year.

How deep and of what quality is the substrate the lawn was laid on?

I used about 4" of topsoil from a farm that was digging some foundations in a field and then on top of that about 3-4" rowlawn loam
