When using this site you can recommend B&Q and Wickes but not the place you work. What if you work at B&Q or Wickes? Is that then deemed advertising? Softus cannot answer the question - so who can?

Maybe to do with the fact that this is a DIY site, apparently, and both of the establishments you mentioned are DIY stores..... apparently :)

i think you will find the no advertising is directed at people who join and have their website as a signature or link to it a lot.

i say people who join, simply because they have not read the rules, so if i have a website called www.diynot.co.uk i could not advertise it because its mine (i already know the owner of this site owns the .co.uk version which is why i linked to it)

There isn't a www.diynot.co.uk ... It's a redirect to this site?

yes i know that, that was my whole point, if i owned diynot.co.uk i could not advertise it.

no JohnD, that is not relevant, but if it was relevant to a post then yes , i think it would be allowed.

however if we start advertising each other, admin would take the easy option and auto edit all urls (wouldnt you?)

But what I want to know is: why is it OK for me to push stores like Wickes (whether I work for them or not) yet not allowed to push small business if I work for them ( but it's OK if I don't)? Can we have some kind of clarification please? I've asked Softus - but he's clueless (as usual when it comes to the crunch).

I'm curious Joe ... Why do you expect Softus to know the details here ... Or anywhere actually

Softus is omniscient. I know that cuz he told me he was.

you can mention a small store, providing as i mentioned its not yours AND relvant to the post.

the rule is there as i also metioned so that people do not have a signature which is advertising their site, or as some have done in the past, posted something like

"hi, i have made a new site, please let me know what you think of it"

In other words, everyone can recommend Wickes and Wilkos who do nothing for this site, yet if someone runs a specialist shop and just happens to stock an unusual item they are not allowed to say so? Even though it is the regular posters that keep this site going, without whom, the site would fold - they are not welcome to post anything about what they do? Well why is that? Why is it that the regular poster is penalised for mentioning their own shop - but can recommend Wilkos and Wickes with impunity? Does that sound right to you?

i see what you mean, but yes.

say i advertise my site, you advrtise yours, b-a-s his etc, then no one would want to click on the "sponsored ads" which pay for this site.

or a NP posts as i said please look at my site wht do you think, its free advertising, this site costs a few bob and the sponsored ads pay for the site

But without the regular posters there wouldn't even be a site that advertisers would advertise on. It's you, me, mega, softus etc that provide the platform that advertisers advertise on - so why should we be treated as pariahs rather than benefactors? Why should Wilkos get the free plug? What do they do for the site?

two sides to a coin.

now look at the other side.

joe-90 advertises, breezer adverises B-A-S advertises, why can't I?

simple solution, no poster advertises. but you can put what you like in your profile
