    Landing jetty

I've been asked by a friend what would be the best timber to replace an existing jetty on a riverbank? At present the "posts" are sound but the decking needs replacing. He's considered the decking sold at the sheds but want a more indivdual touch. Any ideas on wood types and preservative etc...

    Missing fingers incident.

The index finger on my left hand wont straighten completely. The reason for this is because I was morticing a door style and decided to move the timber along to do the middle rail and pulled the chisel down on to it. Severed the nerves and broke the bone. Still it was a talking point down the...

    reinforced 25mm MDF

Would the rod have to be the full width or could it run from say 100 -150mm in from each end as they are fixed at the sides? Would this have any bearing (excuse the pun) on the deflection?

    reinforced 25mm MDF

I have built some cupboards and bookshelves into a couple of alcoves and I seem to have a problem with the shelves. They are approx 880mm span and made from 25mm veneered MDF. The thing is when they are populated with books there is a slight bow in the middle. Hard to believe I know. Not exactly...

    Floor tiles on Bitumen paint??

I will soon be laying floor tiles in my kitchen, WHEN she decides which ones she wants. The thing is the floor (which is quarry tile and wont be taken up) is painted with what I think is Johnstones Bitumen paint. I say think because when we moved into the house we found half a dozen or so empty...

    Power to the people.....

Same thing happened to me on Saturday. I was busy fitting my new kitchen at the time. I was wiring up a double socket (with the ring turned off) when suddenly the lights went out. "Oh bother" or words to that effect "what seems to have happened now?". Went down the cellar checked for a...

About 10 years ago I helped manufacture and install a whole kitchen for a well known actor at his country pile 8) . It was made from the finest Mahogany and cost a packet. His personal stylist/designer suggested oiling the worktops with Extra virgin olive oil!! I never got to see the finished...

    Plasterboard ceilings

I've got a victorian house with really ornate plaster covings. The ceilings were in a terrible state so i decided to over board. I was concerned about loosing the "edge" of the coving but after using 3/8 plasterboards and butting up to the covings I have a good finish :D I also recommend the...
