I've been asked by a friend what would be the best timber to replace an existing jetty on a riverbank?
At present the "posts" are sound but the decking needs replacing. He's considered the decking sold at the sheds but want a more indivdual touch.
Any ideas on wood types and preservative etc.

Wish i had the money to own a boat ;)

depends on his budget, oak has always been traditionally used for harbours etc

Opepe, Ekki and Greenheart are all good timbers for piers, jettys etc they are very rot resistant so don't need a preservative. They are also available in large cross sections and lengths -400x400x12m is about the largest.

Green oak would work out a cheaper option about £16 cu ft and you could get this milled to what section you need.

The other alternative might be to consider using baulks of recycled polyethylene - it never rots.
