Rafters - are these timbers required

I'm sure that was their function when the roof was being constructed, but now it's build an tied into the wall etc are they still required? I don't recall seeing these on other houses I've lived in.

Rafters - are these timbers required

Hi, I want to insulate my garage roof rafters and the timbers attached at at 45degrees in the picture will make the job a pain but I was wondering if they are actually structurally required, or were they just used in the construction of the roof and just left attached?

Pipes bang bad when turning water ON

I've had an investigate and there is a PRV installed. Tried turning it down and had to turn many many times before any difference was made. Now I've set it super low to about 1 bar, the kitchen taps a dribble, but when I turn the tap off, the pressure slowly creeps up to 6-7bar over 15mins...

Pipes bang bad when turning water ON

Some help diagnosing how to fix this would be appreciated. (new build house) About a month ago we had a plumber install a shock arrestor to our washing machine supply as it was banging when the water shut of abruptly. Issue fixed, but ever since then another issue has popped up: When we turn...

    connecting toilet to floor soil

I am installing a new bottom outlet toilet to a soil pipe which runs through the concrete in the floor. How do I connect the two together? There is zero clearance between the pan exit and floor level. Is some sort of putty needed?

    Toilet waste exits straight down

Thanks for all the very useful replies. I did find this WC - http://www.plumbworld.co.uk/ceramica-rimini-close-1630-20467 It comes with a flexible soil pipe, butneeds to be 140 from the back wall, my outlet is 240 so with a 100 packer it would have brought the pan too far forwards (it's 685...

I WANT my gloss to yellow....?

I am redecorating our house. Most of the houses woodwork is fine but some needs re glossing. I don't want to completely re gloss every bit in the entire house, but just do what needs doing without there being an obvious difference between the old and the very white new gloss. How can I match the...

Pipe & fittings for new thermostatic shower

So I'm installing a new shower with thermostatic valve in my bathroom. The pipes that fed the old shower are grey pushfit pipes (speedfit?). The new shower valve is quite a weighty unit with no screw holes for mounting or anything, so I'm guessing will have to be supported by the pipes...

    Rubbish concrete

The area is about 3 foot long, and 2-3inches deep. There are some more areas that go to about 6 inches deep. The concrete has been down for years in the kitchen floor. The top layer is a damp proof membrane (bitumen?) about 1 inch thick, which has obviously been broken. A guy on this forum...

    Rubbish concrete

Maybe I did put in too much water. Will I have to remove it and do it again? I still have about an inch to fill, so this 'weak' stuff will be underneath the next layer. I'm going to tile over it by the way. Thanks.
