    MICC Cable

This is quite often the cause of a core going down to earth. I always use a very thin driver to just push the offending sliver out of the way. This all but eliminates the problem.

    Wrong Sleeving

This is very true. Probably why I rarely do CU changes, as the cost of the PIR on top of the change as well as remedials such as bonding etc. usually wack the cost way above the spark who will just change the CU. :D

    NICEIC Domestic Installers

I come across work and PIR's done by NICEIC companies on a regular basis which is a friggin disgrace. Very common scenario, big company, been approved contractor for years and send out kids and idiots out to work. Result=crap quality control. To be honest, they can get away with leading the area...

Gas pipe earthing - inside or out?

??? You can bond the gas and water with the same cable, but is must be continuous throughout its length. It sounds to me like your electrician couldn't be assed to run a cable from the gas to the CU. As for saying about not earthing the pipe inside?! That's exactly the pipe you are bonding...

    A tricky one!!

Oh, and I forgot to say, we recently did a job in the SE for EDS and they wouldnt entertain not using a TNCS for this sort of set-up, so it illustrates that rules vary from region to region?!

    A tricky one!!

LOL, I think you want to re-read the original post, as WE are the ones installing the DNO transformer and cabling and not the consumer installation so i understand all the HV/LV cable types. We effectively work for the DNO in a third party capacity. But they will not permit a TNS installation in...

    A tricky one!!

I've created a bit of confusion here, and made an arse of explaining it. I'll give you the background on why a TT. A recent occurence for Central Networks was they attended a fault at an industrial unit. The unit was the same as our situation above. ie. 1 steel framed building with several...

    A tricky one!!

Its a TT system the DNO doesn't provide an earth terminal. This is the problem, its in a bit of a no-mans land. The DNO will not provide an earth for the chamber. OK, my thoughts on this are that the chamber should comply with class 2 and should not be earthed. The only reason we are getting...

TT systems and cu set ups

Also if your board is metal, the tails will need to enter through a non-metallic opening. :D

    A tricky one!!

Hi all, This is not strictly a diy question, but it might get a few people thinking. A job we are doing at the moment is a transformer for a row of industrial units. On top of the cutout is sat a metal CT chamber, with a meter fixed to it. From here goes the consumers tails into an RCD main...

    Ground floor RCD protection

Strictly speaking, it may just not be the ground floor sockets that feed equipment outdoors. I know it's not very likely that the upstairs will be used for outdoors but a possibility. The NICEIC area engineer told me a story about someone using an extension from upstairs, when I put the same...

    Earthing an unearthed kitchen

Supplementary bonding is not a requirement in kitchens, although the regulations always add unless there is a higher risk of electric shock. The gas main will have to be connected to a main equipotential bonding conductor, which will run back to your consumer unit. I assume this is your only gas...

    quoting for a CU change

Totally agree. The only way we ever do a CU change is with a prior PIR. Imagine fitting a new CU and then finding out the ring main is incomplete, or a low IR reading causing the RCD to operate or many other things. To complete an electrical installation certificate, everything it supplies has...

    Volunteers and Part P

I know its already been said, but when people are throwing around figures of 2k to get part P I dont get it. No-one should really be in the trade without a test kit and qualifications anyway??? I just think that people who didn't bother before werent doing a proper job and have been caught with...
