    Flooring in old house

Agreed...it all needs digging out, also the sand and cement render needs to be taken off the outside walls and replaced with lime, same as the gypsum internally but unfortunately much as I would love to do this my finances won't allow it.

    Flooring in old house

Sorry to pester but today is the day I either take it up and re-do it or put the skirtings on and forget about it! I'd appreciate any thoughts on this, I suppose 6 to 10mm of insulation won't be a miracle cure but does anyone know if it will keep the room slightly warmer, keep heating bills...

    Flooring in old house

Its a sand and cement screed which seems to be laid straight on the earth. No DPM As far as I can tell all the ground floor is the same screed I haven't had any damp problems on the floor yet which surprises me Hopefully long term but I'm aware there may be damp problems in the furture which...

    Flooring in old house

Hi All, I have an old house (c170yrs old) which has a screed floor laid straight onto the earth. I've just laid some click vinyl flooring over the top of it but am thinking maybe I should have put some insulations down. Because of the levels going into other rooms I could only get...

    Brick step

Thanks for the reply, I would potentially do something different but this isn't for me. I'm doing it for someone else. They are keen to use blue engineerings so am just exploring options/opinions so that I can go back to them with something.

    Brick step

Hi All, I'm looking to build a brick step using blue engineering bricks on edge as the tread. I'm wondering if this is the best solution though as I'm thinking they may get slippery in the winter. Also, not sure if it will look good or not! A slab for the tread has been ruled out as an...

    Replacing swimming pool copings

Yeah I'm asking questions on a diy site but it's got a lot of experienced builders here who may have more knowledge about this than me. Good shout about the SBR Benny. Thanks Woody for the informative reply, that's kind of what I was hoping...I can't see a good way of ensuring no debris in...

    Replacing swimming pool copings

Sorry, should have mentioned I am a builder. I've been asked to do this as part of a larger job on the house and grounds etc so I'd like to do it if possible but I am well aware that these things can be specialised. In terms of the actual work...i.e. paving and laying copings I'm fine with...

    Replacing swimming pool copings

Many thanks for the reply I haven't got any close ups but hopefully these will do. They are pre cast concrete copings and the paving will be changed to some kind of light coloured natural stone or something similar. Preferably non slip The only apparatus involved (apart from pool steps and...

    Replacing swimming pool copings

Hi all, I need to replace all the swimming pool edge copings on an external swimming pool approx. 15m x 8m and also replace the paving around the poolside. A few questions Will the pool need to be drained Do I need to use any special product to bed the copings (water level is approx 100mm...

    Salts in mortar bed

Thanks for all the replies. Just for context this is a job I've been asked to have a look at and not my property. I want to go inside and have a look for a possible water leak but the flat is tenanted and they are hard to get hold of. Does it seem likely that the reason for the salts being...

    Salts in mortar bed

Hi All, Does anyone know what the possible cause for this is...doesn't look like efflorescence to me as it's in the mortar although I'm happy to be corrected on that! It's below a window on a groundfloor flat. Many thanks :)
