Hi all,

I need to replace all the swimming pool edge copings on an external swimming pool approx. 15m x 8m and also replace the paving around the poolside. A few questions

  • Will the pool need to be drained
  • Do I need to use any special product to bed the copings (water level is approx 100mm below bottom of copings)
  • Do I need to use any specific type of paving around pool
  • Is there anything else I need to think about which I have missed
Thanks in advance for any help or advice received :)

Post pics please?
What materials - tile, stone etc - have been used?
Is any electro-mechanical apparatus involved?

This might be a Tile forum issue?

Many thanks for the reply

I haven't got any close ups but hopefully these will do. They are pre cast concrete copings and the paving will be changed to some kind of light coloured natural stone or something similar. Preferably non slip

The only apparatus involved (apart from pool steps and diving board) are the 2 sunken filter type things which look like they will stay in situ and can be worked around

Sorry, but thats not a DIY job.
I've done a bit of tiling but never a garden pool or indoors public baths etc.
However, i do know that on a job like that various snags will possibly keep shooting up from the unknown unknowns.
There's a safety aspect even after emptying the pool, and there's your insurance aspect. eg. non-slip surfaces are presumably a must?

Sorry, should have mentioned I am a builder. I've been asked to do this as part of a larger job on the house and grounds etc so I'd like to do it if possible but I am well aware that these things can be specialised. In terms of the actual work...i.e. paving and laying copings I'm fine with that but obviously having the pool there may add complications I'm not aware of.

I would happily hand this over to specialists if necessary but given the current climate I would like to do as much work myself as possible :)

Of course it's a DIY job, it's a slabbing! If the OP is builder, more the better.

You can use ordinary mortar mix for bedding. You just need extra care to ensure the slabs are not knocked until properly set.

It could potentially be done without draining the pool, but dropping debris into the water, plus being able to get to the bed joint to point it up may be problematic.

As for the materials, as long as the slabs are rough surfaced or ribbed and not smooth surface ceramic or quartz you'll be ok.

And ensure the edge slabs are fully bonded onto a firm base.

maybe a drop of sbr in the mix for bond and flexibility and the extra water element?
just a suggestion.

Yeah I'm asking questions on a diy site but it's got a lot of experienced builders here who may have more knowledge about this than me. Good shout about the SBR Benny.

Thanks Woody for the informative reply, that's kind of what I was hoping...I can't see a good way of ensuring no debris in the pool so I guess it would be best to be drained first. :)

Its not a DIY job, & the idea of anyone attempting it without draining the pool wont fly.

Stop with your nonsense of shooting yourself in the foot - perhaps you will read the post referred to.
Please read all posts before commenting on them - it really helps - & then come back & apologise.

I'm sorry if you are weeping - & still not understanding. If the penny finally drops you will apologise wont you?

Did you read the bit where he said 'he was a builder'?

And why did you change your name 4 times???????????????????????????????
