    It's for block paving. You set them in the sand and then run a flat surface (piece of wood / metal) on them to get a nice flat surface which the blocks are laid on.

    Not 100% sure what you mean but black / Red is used to point and edging is normally done with kerbs. perhaps a photo might give us a better indication of what you are trying to achieve?
