    Newly painted bathroom ceiling flaking

a A bathroom ceiling was recently painted with 2 coats of BIN and then 2 coats of Dulux Easy care Bathroom emulsion in soft sheen. There was a week’s gap between the Bin and emulsion. 2 weeks have passed and the paint is starting to flake. Any ideas what has gone wrong and what can be done to...

    Faulty internal light

A builder has removed some internal stud walls from a friend’s house leaving lighting cables hanging from the ceiling where the wall once stood. I helped him tidy up the cabling using additional cable and wago connectors. On restoring power, one of the lights (mains voltage) didn’t work and we...

    Electricity pole in garden

I have a wooden utility pole in my garden which supports the supplies to both myself and my neighbour. I am having ground works carried out near to the pole and the excavation contractor is nervous about how close he can dig to the pole without there being a risk of it being undermined. I have...

    Bathroom through-wall extract fan

Apologies, if not the correct forum but couldn’t find one more appropriate, I am replacing our 4” extract bathroom and notice that both the original and new fans don’t fit flush onto the tiles because they fit into a downwards facing pipe fitted through the wall. I had considered using flexible...

Fixing a light fitting to a plaster ceiling - your thoughts?

Unfortunately, the ceiling rose is just a chrome cup that is attached to my new fitting. The loop in facility is sorted courtesy of a strip of terminal connectors :(

Fixing a light fitting to a plaster ceiling - your thoughts?

Thanks. Fitting is in same position, it just got a smaller rose. I'm kicking myself for not checking earlier! The fitting is for a lounge ceiling and I'd rather not lift carpet and chipboard t&g boards in the bedroom above.

Fixing a light fitting to a plaster ceiling - your thoughts?

The diameter of the rose on my new fitting is smaller than my previous fitting. If I screw the fitting bracket to a joist then there will be a large hole showing when the fitting is attached. I appear to have two choices: either fill a hole in my newly painted ceiling or screw the fitting to the...

Widening a chimney breast - what's involved please?

We would like to install a log burner in our lounge. The chimney is external and too narrow to accept the log burner. The external width is only 44" and I need nearer 60". Could a builder easily widen the bottom of the chimney breast so that the inside could then be made wide enough to accept...

    Mira sport max shower advice

Guys, my 2009 shower used to provide warm water with the knob set at 1/3. It now needs to be set at nearly full to get the same temperature. This was a step change in performance - any suggestions as to what have have failed? Is a new unit the most economical solution? Thanks

    Socket wiring behind skirt

The new sockets will be at the same height as the existing sockets which are 400mm above the concrete floor. The skirts are coming off both for karndean and to hide the surface mounted 10mm heating pipes. Was going to ask an electrician to install extra sockets whilst the skirts were off.

    Socket wiring behind skirt

There seems to be differing advice on what's acceptable wrt horizontal 2.5 mm cabling behind a skirt even if it's less than 150mm from the floor. The skirts will be new with gap filling adhesive to attach them to the walls. Any informed advice? Thanks
