Central Heating Problem - Fibreglass in the System

Hi all (again), The BG engineer has called and found the problem - block at the header tank which, when removed, has restored the world to a happy place. He's recommending a flush, just to clear out all the rubbish, but I can cope with that - friendly, local plumber can do it for under 200...

Central Heating Problem - Fibreglass in the System

Hi all and thank you for your replies so far. I think, so far, the consensus is that 'replacing everything' is not the right way to go at this time. I've consulted another plumber since and he has also suggested that a flush and potentially checking the pipework around the boiler is also a...

Central Heating Problem - Fibreglass in the System

Hi all, My heating stopped working on Friday so I called in British Gas as I have Home Care 400. The engineer seems to think that some fibre glass has made it's way into the system, via the storage tank in the loft. He tells me that this is somehow blocking up the system and that there's...

    DIY carpet softening

He he! The fitter said the same thing! Though when I offered to do it again he was quick to say 'NO!'

    DIY carpet softening

But when I hit people, the crunch sound and bump gives it away - these were very good quality, soft carpets. I do indeed, believe it or not! Why do you ask?

Replacing pendant light with chrome light fitting

Mate, you've been really helpful - thank you! And the same goes to everyone else who has responded! It's a shame that I raise forum entries ready to tackle jobs myself and am invariably left realising that professional sparkies, plumbers, builders and their brethren are around for damned good...

Replacing pendant light with chrome light fitting

I think on this occasion I'm going to avoid any risk of a firey death and get a pro in! On which note, any idea what I should be looking to pay to have two light fittings fitted, on the basis that the existing wiring is sound and we have beams in all the right places?

Replacing pendant light with chrome light fitting

Thanks again for your thoughts mate, much appreciated! We have metal (chrome) light switches throughout the house and also already have a chrome fitting in the dining room. I guess this bodes well? The fittings arrive today so I'll take a look at the existing wiring and see if I can work...

Replacing pendant light with chrome light fitting

Yes, that's right - plastic fittings there at the mo, chrome ones coming. Bloomin' 'eck - why is nothing simple?!!

    DIY carpet softening

Not really a DIY disaster, but new carpets were the culmination of 4 months of DIY decorating and we were dead excited! Fitter arrived on his own as his partner had called in sick. No problems, though, it would just taken him a little longer. By mid-day, he wasn't even half way through. It...

Replacing pendant light with chrome light fitting

Thank you all for the replies! The ceilings have recently been skimmed, so I can't see where / how the ceiling roses were fixed. A trip up into the loft might be in order, to see if I can spy if the fittings match up with a joist. I've only just ordered the chrome lights, so will see what...

Replacing pendant light with chrome light fitting

Hi! Not sure if this is the right forum - I guess the question falls between lighting, plastering and decorating! If mods feel it misplaced, please feel free to relocate to a more appropriate forum. I'm looking to replace the existing pendant fittings in the bedrooms with fairly standard 3...

    Jammed stop cock

I haven't and I wouldn't know a gland nut if it kicked me in the, well, gland nuts. Would you be able to describe the process in a bit more detail so that I can give it a try? Thank you!

    Jammed stop cock

I think this is where the problem lies! Quite why the previous owners didn't have the stop cock relocated when they fitted the kitchen, I don't know. I should be able to invoice them for any work that needs done! As it is, got a plumber coming round next week with license to hack the hell out...

    Jammed stop cock

We have a low flow rate from the kitchen and outside taps. We thought perhaps the internal stop cock was not fully opened so went to check. The stop cock is completely jammed - no movement either way! Any advice on getting it unstuck? Have sprayed some WD40 into it, tapped with a hammer but...
