Not really a DIY disaster, but new carpets were the culmination of 4 months of DIY decorating and we were dead excited!

Fitter arrived on his own as his partner had called in sick. No problems, though, it would just taken him a little longer. By mid-day, he wasn't even half way through. It was sunny and the wife and I were working from home so I thought I'd stick the BBQ on and have some lunch. Popped in the 4 wheel drive to nip to the butcher and picked up some burgers and sausages - lovely jubbly.

I pulled back into the drive way and saw our carpets sitting square in the middle of the drive. "They weren't there when I left", I thought. Then, seeing the massive tire marks right across the length of the carpets, I realised: "Yes they were!"

Fitter had put them out in the sun to "soften them up" - right behind my car and I'd driven 1.5 tonnes of 4x4 right over the backs of them! The carpets from his next job had been run over too!

Luckily they were rolled and only the backs were marked - a bit oily on the side but those bits were cut off during the fitting.

Fitter says I'm the first customer to drive over my own carpets.

My wife can't believe that I can not only mess up my own DIY but can also ruin something that I have no involvement in whatsoever!

Many years ago I went to visit a customer's factory in Peshawar, Pakistan. I was a bit surprised when the factory gates opened and I saw that the entire compound was covered wall to wall with beautiful oriental rugs which his blokes were washing with a hosepipe and some detergent. My customer just drove his Mercedes in and parked on one. When I expressed surprise he told me not to worry as they do it all the time and a good carpet can take that kind of treatment, in fact, he said, it does them good!
