Are my dimmer switches saving electricity?

Hi, I have dimmer switches throughout the house (£7.99 Homebase type with a rotary knob), but are they actually saving electricity when they're used? If the light's are on at half brightness, are they using 50% less power? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I can't seem to...

    Removing quick leak repair putty

I have a leaking tap connector which I want to remove and replace. However, it has been completely covered in leak repair putty (and I mean covered) right to the base of the tap and a good four inches down the pipe. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove this? Simply chisel away...

Removing a mirror from wall, fixed with adhesive

I have a mirror in my bathroom (approx 1500mm by 500mm) that is held to the wall with 'mirror mate' adhesive or something similar. There are no brackets and no screws. As far as I know, there's no safety backing either. Can anyone give me some advice on how to remove it relatively safely...

Dimming mains halogen and tungsten filament on same circuit

Thanks Crafty - I have had a look at these, but I thought the light was a bit cold and prefer the warmer colour of the halogens. The plan is to always use the dimmer, and I reckon they will be on at less than half their full power. Are there warmer GU10 LED's available? Presumably these can't be...

Dimming mains halogen and tungsten filament on same circuit

Hi - I'm installing 4 x 50W mains halogen lamps in my hallway, wired in parallel from an existing ceiling rose. There is a also a 60W tungsten filament bulb 'round the corner' on the same circuit. Can one 450W dimmer switch dim the lot, or are there any complications with halogen and filament...

    Drilling for concealed hinges

Hi - I need to drill some MDF wardrobe doors for concealed hinges. I have the correct boring bit, but no drill stand. Is a drill stand necessary, or should I be OK after a bit of practice on some scraps? Any advice on this and drill speed etc. will be much appreciated.
