Pulled off a skirting board and...

If the wall is straight, why not use a bit of mortar in three equally spaced dabs leaving flush with the finished surface above, then when that’s set use some grab adhesive on your skirting and stick to those points? Much easier to remove in future if required!

Vent portable AC to sub floor void

Ok thanks, I’ll look at fixing a mechanism into a window instead. Was trying to kid myself the damp wouldn’t be a problem due to air bricks!

Vent portable AC to sub floor void

Hi, I would like to have some AC downstairs, in a cheap way that doesn’t involve coring big holes in brickwork. I was thinking of venting a portable DUAL hose AC into the sub floor void, where air would circulate ultimately through air bricks at the front and back of house. House is a hundred...

Lay 20mm porcelain tiles/flags on gravel

hi, I have some gravel on the side bit of my garden. I want to put some 20mm thick 600mm x 900mm porcelain tiles down on the main bit people walk on to avoid a constant crunching noise. Can I just lay them on the gravel (it is c. 20mm angular kind of gravel), or should I put them on sand, or...

Convert outdoor wall light to plug socket

I read this on another thread I found using the search function. It makes complete sense really. Whilst in this case it would be abit ridiculous for somebody to plug in a tumble dryer using an outside socket that is 2.5m high up the wall, I can easily imagine power tools or a lawnmower being...

Convert outdoor wall light to plug socket

It’s a normal plug. I was thinking of just getting an outdoor single plug socket from screwfix and doing it, but given it’s maybe 2.4 metres up it might be a faff. If I opt to take the plug off and hard wire it in an outdoor junction box, should I fix to the wall and then silicone over the top...

Convert outdoor wall light to plug socket

Hi all, I want to change an outside wall light to some festoon / string lighting. They both run on 240V but the festoon lights have a fixed plug on the end. Can I convert the outside wall light to an outdoor socket? Does it have to be RCD socket? I would have taken the plug off and hard wired...

    Sleepers, which to choose

On a bit of a budget and need to choose some sleepers. I need c. 22 of the 100mm x 200mm x 2.4m ones. They will in contact with soil to make a 40cm high wall (laid widest side down) and, although I've never seen the area particular wet, I am worried about how long they last. I can choose...

    Concreting front 'garden'

Sorry, I meant a DPM - I read it should be in place between the floor and the concrete and between the house and the concrete. I'll check out the Barrow Mix, thanks! The flags are reusable but I really don't like them, they are the cheap square riven sandstone type ones and I have come to hate...

    Concreting front 'garden'

I live in a small Victorian terraced house. The front garden is tiny (1metre between house and garden wall apart from where the front door is as that is set back) and is currently flagged. I need to rebuild the front wall (1/2b currently spanning 3metres) because it's falling down and I'd like...

    Tiling over floor tiles

I am tackling the job this weekend when the Mrs is away. I have the Keraquick tile adhesive and Mapei recommended that I add the Latex plus for improved movement protection. Just wanted to check, should I put adhesive on the new tiles going down as well as the existing floor tiles, and what...

    Tiling over floor tiles

Surely the dust would be unbearable? I have no extraction facilities. I have the kit though so this would be an option. Also, would the Mapei Keraquick Rapid-Set Flexible Adhesive be a good bet?

    Tiling over floor tiles

Noted - thanks for the advice. I am not particularly concerned about the floor height changing, as I will just re-cut the plinths. The living room is already higher because I installed engineered floor over the floorboards, which is also why I thought tiling over the tile was a good idea!

    Tiling over floor tiles

Hi. I want to tile over the floor tiles in my kitchen, because I have been told by the Mrs that I need to get the job done quickly. It is also somewhat temporary as I've been told we will be completely redoing the kitchen in two years... Original tiles are laid on concrete. They are glossy...

    Bolting joists together

For what it's worth, which is little because I am a complete rookie, I recently fixed some joists together. I glued (gorilla glue) and clamped them, then waited, then whilst clamped drilled and put through m10 coach bolts (one high then one low then one high if you get me) and then drove in a...
