Thanks Jason, I am rapidly reaching this conclusion, the only other thing I can think of is to mount the tap into a new hole and blank off the old one with something. This might be cheaper if I can find a suitable blanking plate in chrome or stainless.

If you have a header tank supplying the heating system, then yes, if you bleed a radiator the level in the header would drop, ball valve would operate to refill.

Even if the thermocouple has gone, the pilot should light whilst you are still pressing the gas valve button, it would then go out when you try to let it go. It works this way so the thermocouple has time to heat up before you let go.
