    Wood for raised beds

Hi all, Ok just to update on what I decided in the end. I found a company called link-a-bord who do a modular plastic system of boards and linking pieces which can be used to create planters, raised beds etc. Installed a two-tier bed over easter and have it planted up with my veg. 95%...

    Wood for raised beds

Hi Thanks for the replies. Tanilised may be best for the longevity of the wood but im more concerned with my longevity so im leaning towards untreated wood and some low risk stain/preserver applied every so often I think. While u may be right about the water running off the sides im a bit...

    Wood for raised beds

Hi all, I am planning on building a raised bed for the purpose of growing vegetables however I am a little unsure as to what type of wood would be best to use for the construction. I have searched the forum and notice several posts suggesting treated timber to protect against rotting...

Clarification of part P - simple work in a kitchen

Hmmm it seems I've opened a real can of worms on this one! Oh goody I like a good healthy debate! Circuit protection is the next thing I need to consider whether I change the faceplate or not- the current unit is a combined cooker connection unit and single socket. There has never been a...

Clarification of part P - simple work in a kitchen

Thanks chri5. Thats a valid point about the work being guaranteed for future buyers if done by a professional. I may be tempted to do the simple like for like jobs myself and get an electrician for the bits which are real changes to the purpose of the unit. The cooker point I mention has a...

Correct connection of electrics for combi boiler

Hi, I wanted to pick peoples brains on the correct method for supplying power to a combi boiler. A friend had his boiler replaced a while back and the plumbers wired a three pin plug to the end of the flex leading to the boiler and plugged it into the nearest socket. That struck us both as...

    switch for flourescent light

Thanks guys, much appreciated for clearing that one up will use my usual switch. As regards the x-rated switch I shall reserve judgement - otherwise if I comment I may later wish I'd lef't-it alone!

    switch for flourescent light

Hi all, Now this may be a stupid question but please dont shoot me down in flames if it is. I am planning to replace the wall switch for a flourescent light fitting, but something in the back of my mind tells me I need to use a different type of switch to that used for a normal filament...

    splicing cable into phone wiring

Hi Dazfast, Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately the BT man beat us to it and came out before I got your reply and hence I missed the opportunity to do the work myself. He basically did exactly what you suggested for me to do though! Never mind at least I know for the next time!

Help identifying wiring box - Possibly BT connector

Thanks Tickly, When we eventually got the top off thats pretty much what was inside - the wires from the drop cable, several items that looked like fuses (presumably the surge arrestors) and a few other bits. Got it moved successfully and no-one blew up so all is well! Thanks.

    splicing cable into phone wiring

Hi, Whilst fitting a new front door we have uncovered the telephone wiring between the junction box where the drop line enters the house and the linebox. Unfortunately the previous pvc installers have managed to encase the wire in a tonne of mastic meaning a) it wont go back from whence it...

Help identifying wiring box - Possibly BT connector

Hi unseen, thanks for the reply. That is indeed two wires coming into the left hand side of the box. As far as I can tell they pass through the door frame into the box. Think i'll wait and see what the pvc people say when they come to do the door on thursday. Their surveyor has seen it and...

Help identifying wiring box - Possibly BT connector

Hi, I will shortly be having a new front door fitted, however I currently have a mystery black box attached to the frame of the current door (See below) Can anyone identify the box? I have strong suspicions that its the junction box for the phone wiring connecting the outside line to the...
