Using Geo-fix and Weatherpoint paving jointing compounds

Hi, I recently had advice from the makers of Geo-Fix that their jointing compound should NOT be used in circumstances where paving is laid onto a solid bed. They say that this is because the compound is permeable and when used on a concrete base moisture will not be able to seep away from the...

Why is water staying hot in evening (economy 7)

Hi JohnW2 Yes, there is a light labelled "Timed" on the Horstmann unit which comes on when the Economy 7 cycle starts (around 11.30 pm) and goes off at the end (around 7.30 am).

Why is water staying hot in evening (economy 7)

Hi all Thanks for the swift replies. AndyPRK - The water in the mornings is very hot, but I don't think it's any hotter than normal. Crystal ball - Could I verify this visually (i.e. take the front cover off the timer)? Thanks

Why is water staying hot in evening (economy 7)

Hi, We are running Economy 7 / immersion heater / Horstmann timer system for our hot water. In usual daily use the boost switch on the timer isn't used during the day so by evening the water is tepid at best. However, when running the hot tap last night and again tonight around 8pm, the...

Laying slabs - bed of sand or mortar?

Hi, I recently queried guidance given on the website of a large landscaping products manufacturer which said its paving products should not be laid onto mortar but onto a sand bed. I queried this by email and received the following reply: "Sometimes when flags get laid on a mortar bed...

Water is hot from taps, but barely warm from the shower.

Hi, I presume you mean the rotary control which actually switches on the shower and controls the flow. If so, I must confess I don't know the answer to your question. I have never actually checked this.

Water is hot from taps, but barely warm from the shower.

Hi all, I have an "intermittent" problem with water coming out of my shower which is barely warm, whilst the water from the bathroom tap is very hot. - Our water is heated using an immersion heater - The immersion heater is connected to Economy 7 using a Horstmann timer which is...

    Mould under bathroom lino

Hi, I lifted a small area of lino in our bathroom (in a bungalow) because I kept feeling a small hard lump under foot. I was shocked to find that the floor in the area where the lump was was covered in patchy black/brownish mould. The underside of the lino was also filthy with mould-like...

    Installing a surface mounted socket

Sorry for any misunderstanding. I did say in my first post that the socket was plastic (although I didn't say pattress specifically), and Holmslaw did say in his reply: ".....an additional earthwire from the socket earth terminal to the back box."

    Installing a surface mounted socket

Thanks all for your prompt replies, but am getting a little confused.... There seems to be a difference of opinion over the need for an additional earth wire from the earth connector on the face plate to the terminal in the plastic pattress.

    Installing a surface mounted socket

Thanks. The socket will be connected to a single T&E mains cable. The back box is a basic Wickes item with a small brass connector on the inside corner.

    Installing a surface mounted socket

Hi, I have just purchased a 1-gang, switched, surface mounted plastic socket to replace an existing socket which has a damaged case. I see that the old socket face plate has a metal strip running from the earth terminal to one of the screw fixing points, whereas the new socket just has a...

Bungalow has gas supply, but not in the kitchen.

Thanks. Our bunglaow has solid floors so perhaps routing from above the kitchen would be the only option. The gas meter is in the garage (which is integrated within the bunglaow and the opposite end of the bungalow to the kitchen) and the main pipe goes from the meter through the ceiling of the...

Bungalow has gas supply, but not in the kitchen.

Hi, I am planning a new kitchen, and want to install a gas cooker. Our bungalow has a gas supply (gas fire and back boiler are installed in lounge). However, the kitchen is all electric and I would appreciate feedback on what work would be required to connect the kitchen to the gas supply...

Can I use standard 3-core flex outside?

Thanks Chri5, Some good advice and tips. I now get a clearer picure of the different stages in the work required and the kit to be used. I will get in touch with an electrician. Just one question. Where you say..."You run a spur cable (standard 2.5mm TE) from socket". Can you explain...
