Hi

I am wondering if anyone has any details on building your own Home Security System. I am wanting to make a Media Centre with a large internal hard drive that will also connect up to wireless cameras that i position internally and externally around my house. I am competant (i think) with the IT side but i just wanted any advice i can get on good (not too expensive) hardware to do this. Mainly a good security and camera system that will connect up to my media centre (running either XP or vista). Has anyone done anything similar to this before and can you give any advice?

Thanks

a home security system does not comprise of cameras. that is a cctv system.

no, i am not being pedantic or picky, its just that when you have cameras its called a cctv system, home security is more like alarms and locks

what exactly do you want as the end result?

Hi

I want a system that will record any movement from my CCTV Cameras when set and record to the Hard Drive (i understand the risk that it could be stolen and then be useless but i will setup something to back it up to a secure location). I want to have these cameras internal and external and be able to access them from anywhere via the internet. I also want to be able to flick through my cameras on my home TV. I would also like to install an alarm system. I don't really want to be paying loads for it but i also don't want to get something that any burglar can easily bypass. I am not bothered about having any maintnance contracts or for it to be hooked up to any security companies. I would prefer something that i could quite easily install myself (wireless prefereably). If it could then be hooked into my systems to notify me if it goes off, all the better but that's not too important, it's mainly for a deterant.

Thanks

alumb05, i suggest then you buy an alarm and cctv then

both are your choice, have a look through the posts here, what you want is quite common. I do not see th point of being able to see your cctv over the www. but others do. so its your choice

I dont think you would be able to build something any cheaper than a decent off the shelf DVR really.

To build, you would need;

A low profile media centre PC case, motherboard + cpu + ram and HDD etc and a graphics card with a TV output compatible with your TV.

A CCTV Capture card.

Wireless cameras + receivers (messy)

Software to handle the motion detection, alerting and WWW access (I-Catcher is one example)

Your alarm would just need to be capable of alerting via the WWW when connected to a router.

A DVR will do all of the above (minus the alarm side) in a smaller neater package.

disinfo, you have put it better than me. You get my vote.

Thanks very much for the responses

Can you recommend any good reasonably priced CCTV and alarms? I will take a look at the other posts but i would appreciate your input as you know what you're talking about and i'm sure you have already read hundreds of these posts.

Thanks again

Have a look at Geovision. It is a DVR (install capture card and s/ware on your own PC).

It has a number of add on cards for things like tv-out and IO's.
