Ideal Classic SE12 FF - Is the fan dead?

I have a Classic SE12 FF, it is only 30 months old. Last week it started making a loud noise as if there was a harrier jump jet stuck inside. This noise could also be heard outside as well. I turned the boiler off and back on and it stopped only to start again the next day. It now doesn't fire up at all although I can hear it trying everything it can apart from any noise from the fan. I have a plumber coming out on Thursday but would like to know the following:-

1. Can I claim on the "Sale of goods act" against house builders/boiler manufacture as goods not fit for purpose?

2. What could be wrong, from other posts I have read I think it is fan???

3. How much will it cost to replace just so I don't get ripped off as I don't know the plumber?

fan for one of these is £91 inc (or 82 for the slimline se) dont use the screws that come with it they are too long an impede the fan. Take 20 mins to do so you have a guide to go on

I think a more realistic price for swapping a fan over is around £220.

Thats all very well, but when you purchase the extended warranty/cover you can't call Ideal out for 30 days.

Thats not true - the 12 month cover with an immediate callout is around £300 - or £24.99 pcm - callout can be arranged straight away cant it?

why did you have a non condensing boiler fitted 30 months ago?

Get the fan changed as a one off payment and save your money, great boiler. you'll not need it repaired very often.

Paul new build so if plans approved before april 2005 then non condensinsing was still allowed to be fitted.
And even on new builds approved after that, it is not mandatory to fit a condensing boiler there is other ways to achieve the standards req

Done one of these for an elderly customer this morning. What a ridiculous hard sell performance

They wouldn't accept that all she wanted was the £299 repair, kept her on the phone for about 15 minutes trying to push other insurances and cr*p at her.

I told her to tell him to shut up and just do what she had asked

Ideal couldn't come out until Thursday either. P*ss poor service, obviously still got an awful lot of failing boilers out there.

I was expecting a visit for her tomorrow or at the latest Monday, that's what a decent company would offer an OAP

we are going out to too many installation faults at moment as well!!

Probably due to Ideal so desperate for sales they are giving them away nearly to all the cowboys out there, as good installers won't touch them.

Oh and don't forget who fits the most, Warmfront

why not tthey are about as shyte as every other new domestic condensing boiler and a darn site easier to work on than most.

most of the probs i get with the new HE icos/isar is down to the knuckle dragging installer who isnt either able to read the instruction or just couldnt be arris'd

the m series and earlier HE were awful but the new ones are ok.

But i still think ALL new domestic boilers are awful ill designed and ill tested heaps of crapp and that ALL manufacturers are total rips off merchants who sell shoddy goods and the coin it in off the backs of RGI's with the cost of their shoddy spares. not just Ideal

BRING BACK THE PROFILE, SOLO 2, KINGFISHER MrkII, CLASSIC AND THE MEXICO I say.
