We have a number of VHS video tapes of the children that we want to convert to DVD.
Can anyone suggest the best way for us to do this.

Our situation is...
An old PC which is very slow.
No VCR machine. It recently packed in.

So that narrows it down to buying a specialised converter machine, or sending the tapes off to be converted, which we are very reluctant to do.

Any suggestions/tips gratefully received.

direct way you will need another vhs player there is a lot of second hand used about I obtained one from my local freecycle network you would have to buy a dvd recorder I bought one from an Argos sell off branch for £29.99.could try ebay Connect the two machines with a full scart to scart lead. Load old vhs tape press play on the vhs player with the dvd recorder loaded with the appropriate dvd blank disc press record making sure the dvd recorder is set to record fom the scart input socket (av1 or av2 or scart in etc) and that the record time setting is set to record for 3hours assuming they are e180 tapes sit back with your bottle of whisky and a glass and bobs your uncle.

After having a DVD recorder then swapping for a DVD/hard-drive recorder I would recommend the latter. Far better to edit with and will use standard cheap DVD's rather than needing rewritable which are required with non hard drive models to edit with.

It was in fact cheaper than non hard drive model as it did not have freeview which since we use sky not required anyway.

Cost less than £100 new.

If you use a camcorder likely you also need firewire that is very handy as recorder starts play back on camcorder.

Of course you need VCR but ask yourself for how long and see loads for sale for £50 so to me you are looking at £150+ to get what you need.

Problem is on 21" the VCR looked great but on 42" looks rotten and you need the better quality so no point in transferring films only home movies worth it so I seem to have transferred most of the families stuff on mine.
