This is my first post and before you flame me I have searched throughout and not yet found clear answers to these two questions.

1. I am about to wire the inside of my new garage. Is it OK to use regular T&E clipped to the walls or should it all be done in conduit or trunking? I plan to use metalclad outlets.

2. Part P. My Building Reg approval was granted in 2003 however work did not start until May this year. How do I stand?

1. Use T&E if you want. Conduit would look a lot better though.

2. Er, do it. Don't tell anyone.

What about swa, that way you get mechanical protection of the cable against things like tools, boxes of heavy junk falling, etc

no offence to the OP but the question kinda implies that hes not an electrician - surely this is the situation that you would want an independant check on your work.

Quite right, I'm not an electrician in the domestic sense I've beeen involved with electrical engineering all my working life including designing power systems for outside broadcast trucks to designing and project managing exhibition stands using anything up to 6 x 415v 3-phase supplies pulling 100 Amps per phase. My builder suggested that I do my own installation and I will be getting it checked, tested and certified by their electrician. I was just after some practical advice.

Thanks for the excellent flow diagrams.

I submitted full structural plans in late 2003 and received a letter headed "Building Act 1984 - The Building Regulations 2000( as amended) - Notice of Passing of Building Regulation Plans. It advised me that the plans had been passed in pursuance of Section 16 of the Building Act 1984. I take it therefore that the building work is subject to the regs in place in 2003.

I am a little surprised that my builder has not advised me of this.
