Hi there folks...

I have just removed my ugly gas fire and now wish to fit a log burning fire in its place. I am considering either a full Victorian style cast insert or a cast iron firebasket. I'm guessing the firebasket is simpler to install but is there any issue with the brickwork inside the fireplace? Does the chimney need lining with fire bricks or similar if I use an open firebasket? Does it make any difference if I use a firebasket with back plate?

Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Keefa

Hi,
I used to install fireplaces. For a basket like you say, we would just make sure the chamber area was sound and repoint if necessary. Some people would want the chamber rendered but thats purely asthetical. But the chimney wouldn't need to be lined as long as it is sound i.e no holes up its length. Also make sure that it is swept and buy some smoke pellets to make sure the smoke is drawn up efficiently.
Hope this helps.

Hi Keefa, In the days of coal fires there was a shaped flat firebrick about an inch+ wide, each side of the basket, and I think one at the back. These took all the heat punishment and were replaced occasionally- also required less fuel. Cool- what!

Thanks guys. I'll have a poke around at my local rec yard and see what I can find.
