Hi there,

I have just finished building my wooden workshop (out of Tanilised timber). Apparently, this now needs to be waterproofed as the Tanilisation is inadequate on its own. Additionally, I also read that the treatment should be tinted as some colour is required to provide UV protection. I cannot work out whether water or spirit based treatments are preferred.

I now feel partially educated....but even less confident in what to use.

Any recommendation for a good quality surface treatment (preferably light in colour).

Thanks

I use this stuff - http://www.ronseal.co.uk/products/total-wood-preserver

It's organic-based, so pretty smelly and not as environmentally friendly, but I like the way it soaks in and makes water bead on the top surface.

I painted a new fence with it last summer and it still looks good, so hopefully won't be needing any further treatment for a few years.

Cuprinol garden shades if you want something jazzy.

The wood preserver type like mike suggested are basically an extra dose of anti-rot type chemicals. Water-based fence and shed stains are mainly decorative.

There are solvent based products in between which do both but are much more expensive.

Personally i favour cuprinol products over ronseal. The ducksback in particular is good. Water runs off it like wax
