I'm having a discrepancy with a contractor and among it is plastering:

They've charged for areas as bond and scim when they were only unibonded and scimmed over existing plaster. Before I create a fuss, would these 2 rates be the same? I know unibonding isn't as much work and material cost as bonding!

A steer as to what percentage of the work should be deducted from a bond & scim rate would be helpful.

Thx

A skim is less than half the work. In fact it is about a quarter of the work.

A skimmed room should cost around £180 for a simple 14ft x 14ft room.

Less than bonding when you have to rub over it and finish it?? I don't understand that even though it's in my favour!

OK so if bond & scim is 100%, what is unibong and scim only?

What's a 'Unibong'? Is it something that students smoke?

PVA is part of the prep and only takes a couple of minutes. It should really be done one day, left until the next and then applied again and skimmed whilst tacky. Did they do that?

With bonding you have to hack all the old stuff off and take it to the tip, plus you have to get the new bonding etc onto site etc, so lots of extra work.

You shouldn't use bonding on an outside wall anyway, so I don't know what they were quoting you for.

sorry - unibonding!

No, ignore stripping, this is straight onto plasterboard already in place.

All I need to know is if bond and skim is £6.50p/m2, what is just unibond and scim?

if they have skimmed over existing plaster they would have put a coat of pva over it to prep it, unibond is a brand name for pva it looks like they have put on your quote the prep work "ie" pva/unibond and skim = £6.50 a m2, how may m2 was there? and how much did it come to with or without the doors and windows?

It's irrelavant, I'm just trying to work out how much they should have charged as lots is listed as 'bond & skim' when it was only pva and skim. I can't call them cos this has got nasty, so this is so that I can send their costs back with something closer to what it should have cost. So all I need to know is, if a plasterer charges 6.50 for B&C, what should just pva and skim cost approx to give me something to work with?

If they never said anything about hacking the existing off down to bare brick and then float and set, then you clearly are mistaken by what they mean by 'bond and skim'. They obviously meant 'Uni-BOND and SKIM'.

At £6.50 per metre they've hardly ripped you off, so just pay the guys.

looks like bond and skim= pva and skim ive told u that , let me tell you if it was a float and set job which is undercoat and skim or bond and skim it would have been double the £6 they have charged, your also asking if they should charge for gaps of windows and doors , some do some dont , im on a job in a few weeks commerial where i will be paid for gaps of windows and doors but i wouldent charge it on a domestic job in fact i wouldent give you a price per m2 i would just give you a price for the whole job take it or leave it, their price of £6 or what ever a m2 seems resonable to me if they have made a good job , it looks like your begrudging them the money, your asking how much it should be so you can go back to them with your own price? who paid for the materials? or is it just labour only

There were other areas in the house which were strip to brick float and skim so I've not got confused. Basically it's grant work but it had to be recalculated and I presumed that bond & skim means applying bonding then finish coat, but if bond and skim is pva then skim then I'll not worry, u see what I mean? So 6.50 is a good enough price for a contractor for pva and skim then?

Am I getting this right? It's a grant so it's free to you but you are quibbling? WTF are you talking about? You are coming across as the customer that we tradespeople can't stick.

I'm out of this thread.

If only I HAD TIME TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU JOE!!... they are ripping us off by 7k, it's black & white, they can''t add up, nor can the QS, renown for it!!!! Yes, a grant, which paid barely half what they're billing. Nuff said.

at £6.50 you are getting a good rate for pva and skim. up here its between £8-£11m2

if you are happy with the finish then just pay them.

i wish some one would have give me a grant and paid half of the work ive done to my house, you still havent told us who paid for the materials? it looks like it wasent you so im guessing that £6.50 am2 included the materials if that is right its a very good price, and if you paid for the materials its still a good price, looks like uve had more than a bargain if half of it has been paid for by the public so stop whining
