Hi all

We are embarking on doing a single story extension and a loft conversion, I don't live in a fancy detached out, just a traditional 3 bed semi, we want to do a large back extension, (the width of the house) and a loft conversion (nothing fancy). we have 20k :-/, my father is a builder and uncle a joiner so labour charges for the shell but will be for plumber and electrician?, do you think its possible?

In this neck of the woods that would cover the materials.....
You have some great family if there working for free...

I'm assuming that sentence means you don't need to budget for family members ??
People do actually think like this, they assume because they are family, they have no obligation to pay or that they will get extreme discount. All traders know a difficult family member.

There are actually family members who help each other. As there are people who would refuse to take any money from family members.

Are you on about Polish families? If so i agree, the community has a lot of time to help each other out and to offer the UK

It really is no different to UK segments in southern France

Helping a family member is one thing (putting up shelves or even building a shed) but being expecting to build an extension for f all is taking the p. Guess the OP is going to go round to their houses and do all their domestic chores every night while they're working on his extension? thought not.

Do you think there are many family members out there willing to help a struggling builder and offer to say, pay him double?

If family members are so fond of each other then shouldn't it be a two way thing?

You often find that if you are the family member with a van, you will alway come off worse.

Lets face it, what can office knobbers actually offer?

Calm down dickhead. Office knobbers? I work in an office, and I am always helping family fix their computer, put up a shelf, changing a socket, fitting a satellite dish, decorating, laying floors, helping fill out tax forms.... I never ask for money nor would I accept it.

Maybe you don't come from a close family, but I know people who would build an extension for close family. How do you know what the OP has or hasn't done for their family?

Off your high horse please.

Are you on a salary or are you self employed?
If i gave up pay for six weeks or a couple of months with me and my lads on an extension I would go bankrupt.

Ever dig footings in clay soil with temps at 1 °C in a blizzard, or are you a typical fair weather volunteer?

It's a sh itty job building in the Winter but somebody has to do it. The only thing that keeps us going through all the rain, wind, mud and pain is knowing that we may some money at the end of it.

Typical of an office knob to suggest doing it for free.

I'm not surprised.

Doesn't get that cold here, but I have dug trenches for footings and ducting in cold wet weather. I didn't enjoy it, I doubt anyone does.

This job may be in the summer.

Typical bellend who thinks his opinion is the only valid one. Please show me where I suggested it be done for free?

I'd like to see you come and do my job for a few days.

There is a BIG difference from changing a plug to building an extension!

I'm well aware of that, but I am however offended by noseall's sweeping generalisation of people who work in offices, which was my point.

I would never attempt a full construction project, and I also wouldn't expect a tradesman to do my job managing global data networks. I however, wouldn't call someone a tradie knobber, or anything similar.
