I have a combi boiler with a digital control unit in the hall and a dial thermostat next to that, I set the control unit to continuous and just use the thermostat to turn the heating on but the problem is the themostat wont click the heating on unless it's turned right round to almost as far as it will go! and sometimes it wont click on at all. Is there some adjustment to get the thermostat to click the heating on where it should be around 19-20c and not way off the scale? or do I need to replace?

You may well find that the thermostat is an electronic, rather than mechanical, device with an inbuilt feature that ignores fast movements of either temperature or people twiddling the dial. Try adjusting it to the desired temperature and waiting a few minutes to see if it then responds. The model number or manufacturer's name of the thermostat would be useful to know.

Is the thermostat in a place where it can pick up heat from another source? Near a radiator or fire perhaps? Maybe it is in direct sunlight. If this is the case it needs moving, if not it needs replacing.

With a bit of blu-tack you could stick a small thermometer next to the room stat to check the calibration

It's a Honeywell thermostat, I tried setting it to 25c and even 30c for long periods yesterday but still the same, it's only clicking on way off the scale and when the house heats it wont even click at max.

Its halfway up the stairs and not next to any heat source or sunlight, I could put a thermometer next to it but just by feeling it's certainly not 25c on the stairs it's more like 19-20.

1. Has the thermostat worked OK in the past?

2. Does it have a digital display, or just a dial with numbers round the edge?

3. Make and model of stat would help.

Unsure if worked in the past as only just moved into the property and it was already like that.

Make is Honeywell but unsure of model but it is a dial not digital.

Thought that might be the case.

The stat could be faulty or wired incorrectly.

Can you remove the cover (power off first) and post details of how it is wired; or post a pic.
