Hello All,

Old thermostat is buggered now so bought a new Salus wireless thermostat. But found out later that the new thermostat needs a live feed in it, the old one just had three wires coming in it (black, red, copper).

I am noob at electrics but am guessing it should not be too difficult as the location of the thermostat is just above the electric cupboard and the main boiler switch is also there. attaching some pics. pls advise

I'd consider mounting the Salus receiver inside the electric cupboard. It will need Live and Neutral plus the existing 2 wires (can only see two in picture) used for boiler switching which will connect to NO and COM.

That unearthed metal box isn't a great idea for a wiring centre/junctiion box. There are plenty of plastic enclosures available with more than enough terminals for this sort of thing.

You will need to get a 4 core cable and replace the 2 core cable to the thermostat with the 4 core. A live and neutral can be taken from the terminals where your "mains electric" live and neutral connect to on that choc block terminal. However, that is some pretty poor wiring and workmanship whoever did that and as has been said already the metal box needs earthing. Preferably you should use a fit for purpose junction box made from plastic and replace all of those tired looking flex cables with fresh new stuff.

Thanks for replying, Just bought the place couple of months back. Ya I know it looks a bit shabby. Someone told me that I will also need replace the consumer unit with new RCD ones. will get it all replaced once the savings pot is ready to take more damage.

The four core wire seems like a good idea

That's not really the case.

The receiver should be placed by the supply and could be connected using two cables.
The two core cable to the existing thermostat is redundant.

Well yes I agree on that, but why use two cables instead of one multi core cable? Just looks neater and best practice I would say. As long as it works i suppose it doesn't matter how it's done as long as it's safe.

There is no need to upgrade the consumer unit just because it doesn't meet the current standards.
