Can you despise certain foods?

Strange question. But yes, it can. Despise is a transitive verb (meaning it can relate to someone or something).

Interesting question.
One of my pet hates is when someone uses the word 'hate' instead of dislike, or similar.

I think it has a French origin, but modern day French, as far as I'm aware uses Je n'aime pas de tout. = I do not like it at all. Which, to me, is a more eloquent expression.

Hate is a much stronger term for dislike though isn't it? Sometimes hate is appropriate.

Again, blightyman, this is promising to be an interesting discussion.
To me, 'hate' has serious negative connotations, whereas 'dislike' is a more passive term.

Exactly. That's why hate is useful.

Yes, SS, by definition you can but I don't think it sounds right to say you despise an object.

despise is close to hatred so in general the wrong description
dislike is closer
to despise involves almost evil force in participating as in forced to eat in a sadistic way
or being forced to do against your will to do something that cause distress unesisserilly

So, being philosophical, is there a continuum:

<---------not like-----------dislike------------despise-------------hate-------->

Can one then attach other descriptions to those words, to do with the 'energy' involved in the emotions:

<-------ambivalent---------avoid------------aggressive-----------extreme aggression---->

Wow being pc even about food now eh ...The lefties know no boundaries to their ludicrous ramblings

I despise chicken feet, hate chicken gizzards and dislike chicken wings. However, I like chicken legs and love chicken breast.

Sounds fair enough to me.

Maybe loathe would be a better choice of verb, though?

I can eat almost anything , there are several things I don't like , however , coffee , celery and tripe for instance. I wouldn't go as far as to say I despise or hate them as such and I expect there are many others in the same position.
So while I wouldn't despise something purely on taste or texture or whatever connections made with food or methods used in the production can get nearer that word. The blood and body of Christ twaddle which really is nothing more than tasteless wafer and sherry , kosher or halal nonsense , veal crates and pate de fois gras , those are things to despise.

Where on earth do you get to buy chicken feet for dinner?! He he. Sounds delightful!
