Whilst clearing the garden last week we came across some commemorative bricks at the top of the garden (as per pic)

I just wondered why these came about their purpose?

I have found a couple online that have sold (not for much) Are they the brickies equivalent of a commemorative tea cup? :D

Ben WW, good evening.

I recall some time ago now watching a TV Programme with I think Fred Dibna knocking down a Chimney somewhere?

There was a single Black brick built into the large tall chimney.

It was expounded in the TV show that the Black Brick was incorporated as a mark of respect to someone who had died in an industrial accident whilst constructing the chimney.

The Chimney being blown down was well over 100 Years old [at that time] that TV show was many years ago now?

It would appear fitting to have some sort of Commemoration for whatever reason? The practice it appears has been on going for some considerable time?

Ken.

I like the hypotheses however most of these are to commemorate a visit generally, really like the idea of remembering fallen tradesman as part of a build.

The ones we've found seems an odd thing to make to celebrate such a thing such as the visit of a Pope or the Prince and Princess of Wales...

they look very professional, I suppose a brickworks might have seen the chance to make a few quid. Once set up, they would cost pence to make, and you could sell them for pounds. Shift a few thousand...
