Gas regulator box in garden

Hi All

Hopefully someone here will understand what I'm talking about as I've been searching for a couple of hours and cannot find anything of use on google.

In my garden I have a green box. In fact most people on my street have either a green box or a concrete box on the edge of their properties. I have asked several of my neighbours and no-one has a clue what they do, except that its something to do with the gas supply and occasionally they smell of gas. So I've basically left mine alone.

Anyway there is currently a new build going up next door to me and the builders asked me if they could look at the direction of my drains to work out where to dig to connect theirs up. As it happens my drains went right under this green box. So the builders opened it up and have found that its half full of soil inside and is fairly well corroded. The builders called it a pressure regulator. They have recommended that I get the gas company out to look at it because its so corroded.

Some places tell me that anything before the gas meter is not my responsibility however this old thread on here suggests otherwise.

What I want to know is simple.

1. Anyone think they know what this thing is?

2. If it is corroded and needs replacing who is reponsible for the costs?

I replied to this in Building and also suggested moving it to Plumbing and CH. However, my post was removed for some reason so the original date of the OP applies and it is buried pages back. Hard to get a reply. So this is a free bump.

My rudimentary understanding is that generally the gas network is owners responsibility after the meter. Not sure if this principle applies specifically to properties with garden sited regulators though.

@Hobart If there's advanced corrosion and a smell of gas then phone 08000 111 999 and get the gas transporter out straight away, don't delay.

Why not post a picture? Saves a lot of guesswork. It may be a medium pressure regulator, and not your responsibility.

call them up they will be out within an hour if you say you can smll gas and it wont cost you anything its all down to them

as already said it is a medium pressure regulator and is the responsibility of you gas transporter, do not mess around with it

As amazing as this is - in this case the builders are correct.
