Does anyone have any idea what the lines mean in the back of the bricks in the photo? They are Forterra Old Trafford Red. The brick on the left has 3 vertical cuts and the brick underneath has 4. Just curious.

Its for when you are laying bricks in the dark, so you know which is the back just by touch.

I initially thought they were to help chop a brick into half/quarters, but having built my extension with them, they aren’t.

You used to be able to get Fluted LBC commons which were sometimes used when bricks were used on the inner skins and party walls. Engineering commons sometimes have to give a bit of grip for render or plaster.
The old Terracotta blocks had a dovetail flute(as noseall said) because this type of clay had very little suction for the spreads.
