Hi - just been asked to help run a 15mm water pipe (plastic) from a friend's house to his shed (30m away). Wondering what the recommended depth is if it's burried (thinking about frost here, though below spade depth is probably minimum from the pov of mechanical damage). Cheers.

Ditto, 30" (2 foot 6 inches) 750mm is the minimum for frost protection.

If you have to go any shallower to avoid drains make sure it is well insulated, making sure any insulation is waterproof -eg Armaflex, and plinth over the top of the pipe to avoid mechanical damage/crushing.

The Water Regulations Act (1999) stipulate 750 min - 1350 max.

Thanks. I remember the figures 750-1350 from my plumbing course. That's for mains water feeding a house, I guess, but for running to a standpipe in the garden? Hmmm...that's a big job. Seems to me that if the pipe is isolated where it leaves the back of the house during bouts of extreme cold weather (not that common in London these days) and the standpipe tap is left open (?), then not much harm will come to it if it's a bit shallower. Thanks for the replies, anyhoo.

the depths stated are to prevent freezing basically so they apply, to all mains fed pipes buried in the ground.

What about the blue pipe you see in rural areas thats aboce ground level?

Farmers and rural installations are usually a law unto themselves. Don't find many regs inspectors that will wander onto a farm and advise the farmer to insulate or bury their pipes.

Homespark, the regs do not just apply to incoming services.
"NO water fitting shall be installed in a way that may cause contamination, waste or undue consumption."
If it is shallow enough to freeze and burst... you have waste/undue consumption.

If we're playing the regs game make sure the bib tap has a seperate DCV, the integral DCV bib taps are only legal for replacing an existing tap...

Get the digging done before the ground starts to frost/get too wet now the weather is cooling.

But if it`s a green /yellow HOSE pipe you can do WTF you like with it beyond the hose union tap

Usually leave it trailing round the yard submerged in muck...

I've actually come across people who have laid new supplies out in hoselock etc to replace their lead and then moan when it fails regs inspection... ... must be something in the water eh?
