Hi All,

Hope you are keeping well.
I’ve noticed my Bristan Tap has started dripping from this Allen Bolt (from appearance).

Can someone please provide an explanation for this and also a solution?

From here I would say it is leaking from the swivel joint just above the screw rather than the screw itself. There is probably a rubber O-ring there which at best needs cleaning and at worst replacing. See if you can find an exploded diagram of the tap and if the ring is available as a spare part.

1. The seal(s) which prevent water escaping from the swivel base of the spout have deteriorated.
2. Replace said seals. Install with a smear of silicone grease.
3. To access seals, remove Allen grub screw (don't lose it), and pull spout upwards and out.

Please remember to isolate both hot & cold to the tap before doing the above and be prepared to remove pipes from under the worktop to enable the tap to be removed. ;)

Why is he likely to need to take the whole tap off when it just wants new O ring? Isolate the supplies, yes - but take the thing right off ... ???

It’s one of those quick change taps which just needs a Allen bolt to be removed in the event of replacing the tap. It doesn’t sound like this should be necessary.

The water does appear to be sleeping out of the Allen bolt but I suppose it may be just above it. Difficult to discern.

Is this washer likely to be widely available if I pull this apart?

I will try to track down some diagrams for the tap next...

If it's a basic O ring (which is all all I've ever found in there) then a hardware shop will sell you one for 10p. Hardware shops are apparently allowed to open - our local one is.
Or Screwfix and Toolstation have assorted sizes in a box. Really handy to have round the house or on your van - if you have a van. Both are open to the public albeit on a click and collect basis.

Ah, didn`t realise it was the Bristan quick release tap having never seen one, have read and seen video where it self disconnects flooding the kitchen if owner is not around though.

There was a suggestion of using a sealant with the washer. Can I use an existing tube of LS-X?

Silicone grease is what you want here.....if you can’t get the correct O ring or it still leaks, try packing the groove out with ptfe tape.
John :)

Hi Guys,

I just unscrewed this and this is how it looks. It doesn’t have the washer I was expecting. Any ideas on what needs to be replaced?
Thanks again

Bristan have a good spare parts section online. Look at yours and see if the Exploded Diagram shows a seal.

Is that a rotating joint, or is it fixed?

The top half of the tap rotates. This is the section in the picture

then LSX no good. PTFE tape will work for a while, until it wears (is OK on rarely-used stopcock and lockshield spindles)

I'd have expected a rubber ring, and white silicone grease.
