The high fault currents and their rapid rise when the inverter failed will have created very high voltages across the inductance(s) of the filter coils. These voltages and the energy in them from the cores may have been enough to blow the MOV apart.
They certainly look like MOVs to me, though as you say the legend on the PCB suggests they are capacitors, but I suspect that's not the case. I f you can confirm they are MOVs then this might be a suitable replacement
