Strut mount change!

For the sake of a few bolts down below and taking the strut off, I wouldn’t bother.

That looks like a faff, easier to get it out and see what your doing.

Will likely remove both at some point. Both struts were removed last year and new mounts/bearings fitted but they've collapsed already. Meyle brand so will look elsewhere next time.

I've always just removed the whole thing, though it might be better method on a Mondeo as the pinch bolt always seems to be seized and snaps off.

For sure, always replace that one with new.....they’ve been snapping since time began.
I’ve never had one snap whilst undoing, only when retightening hence a stock of high tensile bolts.
John :)

I always buy a new bolt in advance as well, and then run a tap down the thread to clean it out. I once spent 2 hours getting one out, taking it out an extra half turn each time, WD40, winding it all the way back in, back out an extra half a turn, lots of heat etc and it snapped when there was less than 5mm to go!!

On the Fiesta I found the only way was to grip what was left of the bolt with Mole grips and continue winding clockwise.....holding the bit that was poking out, of course.
John :)

Never had a problem with a Fiesta, I had the struts out in well under an hour. Although it took longer on my own Fiesta, but that's cos my mate did it for me under my supervision, I'd just had an operation and the day I started driving again one of the springs broke. He doesn't usually work on cars but has been getting quite interested in it of late so he offered to do it if I supervised.

So why are strut pinch bolts so fragile?

In my recent thread about Bora wishbone arms, everyone reckons they use the old bolts.

It was only the Ford ones that seemed to give up - I've no idea why but it was a very regular occurrence so after that it was new high tensile 10mm bolts for me.
John :)

I must be lucky, or maybe I don’t do as many as you, but I’ve never had one seize or snap.

To be fair its only been the Mondeo I've had trouble with, I think I had to cut off the bolts on my mates Toyota or it may have been my brothers Mazda, but they were just a nut and bolt so were easy to get at rather than being a captive bolt like on the Mondeo.
