Hello.

I've been checking this forum for answers and seen a few helpful posts, but nothing seems to solve my issue.

This year we bought and renovated an old council home built in the 1940s. After a ridiculous amount of money and lots of debt we have moved in. A month later and I find the central heating is not working.

Upon investigation it appears the boiler is receiving no central heating call. There is no thermostat, just a Salus RTX505 receiver. I'm have removed this from the wall to check the wiring and it looks suspect.

With a little more reading it looks as though someone may have tried to link out the receiver. I don't want to poke around with it too much. There are 3 connected cables. See attached.

Long story short. I'm just looking for heating before it gets too cold.

If there is no thermostat it ain't going to work!
First thing if you have a multimeter and are competent to work with mains voltage check there actually is a live feed.
Probably needs replacing don't fit another Salus!
We use EPH CP4 rf stats very reliable but lots of others out there.

I appreciate the response. Yes, there is power. The boiler itself has controls. I'm happy to use those, but it seems like this unit is overriding the control panel. Can I just remove it?

I have the installation manual for the boiler and have some experience of electrical appliance work. Just nothing applicable to boilers.

Sounds like it could be linked out at the boiler as there's nothing in the NO connection, unless it was that earth wire

I suspect someone has used the CPC as a switched live that was connected to the NO connection but check where the CPC goes to before reconnecting it. If my suspicion is correct you could get the boiler to fire by adding a link between COM and NO so at least you will have heating but without temperature control.

That's not the boiler, that's the receiver
Apologies. Thanks for bearing with me!

Below are the images of the main PCB and the connection from the receiver. Of the two visible wires into the connection block the right hand one in the image is the connection to the receiver.

Hey there.

Traced the CPC wire back to the terminal block in the boiler. In the wiring diagram this is listed as the TIMER wire.

I can see in the manual that I can link ROOM STAT and TIMER to get the heating going when needed.

It's an ESPIRIT ECO 30. Can this boiler only run with a thermostat? At this point, I figure I can just wire a new one myself if necessary.

Seems like the Ideal thing to do :p. You can probably link the Com and NO at the receiver end or at the boiler end of there's a selector switch for heating or hot water, but that's just to get by really, best with a room stat

Thanks, all.

Heating fired up by linking the ROOM STAT and TIMER on the connection block. The boiler appears to work fine and I appear to have had a crash course in boiler/reciever/thermostat. I've ordered a cheap one that hopefully will work.

I'll put a recommended one in when I finish spending on this DIY nightmare of a house.

Thanks so much everyone.
